“Sermon on the Mount: Judge Not” with Rev. Dr. Gregg Anderson 11-13-11
Everyone has an opinion about everything. Too often those opinions become judgments and those judgments are rendered out of some illusion of superiority, Jesus is so astute when he says in the Sermon on the Mount, "Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" We are all human beings and it really is a lot less work to be a lot less judgmental. Music is performed by Susan Nicholson and Shelley Warren.

Aspen Chapel Welcomes the Tibetan Buddhist Monks from Deprung Loseling, Closing Ceremony 8-11-11
Tibetan Buddhist Monks from Deprung Loseling Monestary constructed a Mandala Sand Painting in the Sanctuary at the Aspen Chapel, beginning 8-8-11. Traditionally most sand manadalas are destroyed shortly after their completition. This is done as a metaphor for the inpermanaence of life. The sands are swept up and placed in an urn; to fulfill the function of healing, half is distributed to the audience at the closing ceremony, while the remainder is carried to a nearby body of water, where it is deposited. The waters then carry the healing blessing to the ocean, and from there is spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.

“Reverence for Life” Albert Schweitzer with Gregg Anderson
The Aspen Institute has just finished the Aspen Ideas Festival. Hundreds of people attended from all over the country and world. Aspen Times columnist Paul Anderson wrote yesterday "Ideas Fest reflects something deep from Aspen's history. It harks to the shared experience of a convocation in a canvas tent in a mountain meadow to hear Albert Schweitzer, Thornton Wilder, Ortega y Gasset and other luminaries of their day. The Ideas Festival is an annual rebirth of Aspen's cultural renaissance of 1949, a celebration of founding principles and a high point in history."

“America Spirit” with Gregg Anderson
This country was historically and clearly founded under God and strongly affirmed religious tolerance and freedom. Yet today most people interpret the First Amendment as "freedom from religion" versus "freedom of religion". This may be an old theme from the pulpits these days, but what happens if we completely forget?

Rev. Dr. Gregg Anderson - “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth”
We always appreciate the humility of the meek, and always want to be supportive of their challenges. In Aramaic however, there is a wonderful interpretation of this Beatitude which reads, "Healthy are those who have softened what is rigid within; they shall receive vigor and strength from the universe."

Joel Brence M.D.-"Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven”
Joel Brence, M.D. will address the first Beatitude: "Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." This first Beatitude has often been a bit if a mystery to many of us. Are we not supposed to be "rich" in spirit? Dr. Brence will, undoubtedly, provide the background behind this Beatitude and shed light on its real meaning for all of us. Please join us as we begin this series entitled "Living the Beatitudes" between now and the Holy Week of Easter.

Rev. Dr. Gregg Anderson-"Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they shall be called the Children of God”
This Beatitude has always stood out for Gregg simply knowing that the founder of the Chapel, Bishop E.M. Yost was a Mennonite minister. Peace is a primary purpose of the Mennonite Faith and peace is a primary purpose of the person whom we have bestowed the name Prince of Peace. The artist of out Beatitude windows chose to depict the dove carrying forth the olive branch to Noah which promised a land of peace after the turbulence of a flood. How can we each be peacemakers today within our own turbulent times?

Rev. Dr. Gregg Anderson - “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”
This is the Second Sunday of Lent, presenting the fifth Beatitude. It is also the first day of Spring. The word Lent actually means Spring. Lent is our springtime preparation toward Easter. The word MERCY is related to the words merchant and mercantile and means exchange between two people or entities, hence, if we desire mercy, we must give mercy. It is a beautiful Beatitude and description of how we should all be merciful toward one another. Together, let us explore these inspiring words and essential teachings of Jesus, and the message of Lent, Easter and Spring.

This service begins a series called "The Authentic Teachings of Jesus: Living the Sermon on the Mount". It describes "how to live a life dedicated to understanding the work of God, free from hypocrisy, full of love, grace, wisdom and discernment." The Sermon on the Mount packs the core of Jesus' ethical teaching into just 3 chapters of Matthew's Gospel. Over the past 2 millennia, these have helped shape the moral framework of great thinkers and challenged many to live a better life. Join the Aspen Chapel for this winter-long exploration of the beloved Sermon on the Mount - for many, it strikes a heart-felt chord as being authentic, essential and the root of Jesus' teachings.

“The Meaning of Mary Magdalene” with Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, PH.D.
Despite a deliberate effort on the part of early Christian leaders to diminish her influence, Mary Magdalene was in fact the only apostle who fully understood the radical, non-dual nature of Jesus' teaching, and was most clearly able to transmit his message. Cynthia references the "Gospel of Mary Magdalene" and "The Gospel of the Beloved Companion" by Jehanne de Quillan as she describes the material in her new book on the subject: "The Meaning of Mary Magdalene, Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity."

“Preparing the Way of the Lord with John the Baptist, Paul the Apostle & Mary of Magdala”
Advent has been a time to prepare our hearts and mind for the birthday of Jesus but what does this mean in reality? It typically means getting the decorations up, sending cards, buying and wrapping presents, making travel plans and lots of parties. All of this can actually be good. It does make the holiday special. But can we also take a moment to listen to the wisdom of John, Paul and Mary? They all played a significant part in creating this time of year known as Christ Mass.

“The Age of Spirit”
During the groundbreaking ceremony of the Aspen Chapel the founders stated their hope to "create a national-global ecumenical center for seminars and dialogues on theological concerns of contemporary society." It has always been the Chapel's intent to keep our faith up to date. This Sunday, Gregg concludes his series on Harvey Cox's book "The Future of Faith." Professor Cox says that we have moved from the Age of Faith to an Age of Belief and now are moving into an Age of Spirit. What does the new Age of Spirit look like for our contemporary society, the Chapel, and for ourselves?
